The Restorative Justice APPG has been reformed following the General Election in July, with a new leadership to take the work of the APPG forward into the new Parliament.
An inaugural meeting of the APPG took place soon after the General Election, on 23 July, attended by members of Parliament representing both Houses and five political parties. Four officers were elected at the meeting:
- Gavin Robinson MP (DUP) – Chair of the APPG
- John Slinger MP (Labour) – Vice Chair
- Baroness Jones of Moulsecoomb (Green) – Officer
- Sir Jeremy Wright MP (Conservative) – Officer
APPG Chair Gavin Robinson said: “I am happy to be chairing this APPG on Restorative Justice as we look to raise awareness of Restorative Justice in Parliament; driving forward a cross-party conversation on how Restorative principles can support not only the criminal justice environment, but also bring healing in both the education and health sectors too.
“Working across devolved governments is going to be key to our work, and we are keen to engage with colleagues representing all the nations and regions in the United Kingdom.”
The Restorative Justice All-Party Parliamentary Group is proudly supported by several leading groups involved in Restorative Justice across the United Kingdom. This Advisory Board provides strategic counsel and support to the APPG, along with contributions towards the running costs of the APPG. Amongst these is the Restorative Justice Council (RJC) whose CEO, Jim Simon, is also Chair of the APPG’s Advisory Board.
“The Restorative Justice’s APPG Advisory Board is one of the most active in Westminster, and the APPG was one of the very first to be re-formed following the General Election”, said Jim Simon.
“The Board is a dynamic group made up of multiple organisations seeking to make a significant impact on public discourse around criminal justice, health and education.
“We are always welcoming prospective new members for the Advisory Board, and interested organisations should contact CalComms, who provide Secretariat services to the APPG.”
The Restorative Justice All-Party Parliamentary Group was initially formed in April 2021 to drive forward cross-party conversations on Restorative Justice and raise awareness about its principles. The goals of the APPG are threefold:
- To examine the use of restorative justice principles within the UK justice system and beyond
- To raise the profile of restorative justice principles within Parliament
- To provide opportunities for policy discussion and consultation
